09/06/2025Our clients often ask us whether they can vote being on Limited Leave to Remain (LLR). Many people think they can only vote if they are Commonwealth citizens which is not the case in the Isle of Man. This article outlines the eligibility criteria for voting, the registration process, and the methods available to cast your vote in the Isle of Man. Limited Leave to Remain (LLR) is a type of immigration status granted to individuals who are allowed to stay in a country—such as the Isle of Man for a specific, limited period of time. It differs from permanent residency or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), which allows a person to stay indefinitely.
Individuals residing in the Isle of Man under Limited Leave to Remain (LLR) are generally eligible to register and vote in Isle of Man elections, provided they meet the age and residency requirements and are not subject to any legal incapacity to vote.
🗳️ Voting Rights for People with Limited Leave to Remain in the Isle of Man
For residents of the Isle of Man living under LLR, understanding your civic rights, particularly regarding participation in elections, is essential.
📍 Understanding the Isle of Man’s Political Framework
The Isle of Man is a self-governing Crown Dependency with its own parliament (Tynwald), laws, and electoral systems. While it maintains a relationship with the British Crown, it is not part of the United Kingdom, and decisions on electoral eligibility are made under Manx law.
The Island has two main electoral events:
- House of Keys General Elections (every five years)
- Local Authority Elections (every four years)
âś… Who Can Vote in the Isle of Man?
Eligibility to vote in Manx elections is based on a combination of age, residency, and legal capacity. To vote, you must:
- Be at least 16 years old on or before polling day
- Have been ordinarily resident in the Isle of Man for the 12 months preceding the date of registration
- Not be legally excluded from voting (e.g., due to certain criminal convictions)
Individuals with Limited Leave to Remain are eligible to register and vote in Isle of Man elections, provided they meet the above criteria.
📝 How to Register to Vote
If you’re eligible, you’ll need to register on the Isle of Man Electoral Register. This can be done by:
- Contacting the Electoral Registration Unit(elections.gov.im)
You will need to provide:
- Full name and current address
- Date of birth
Being included on the electoral roll is also beneficial for building a credit history on the Island.
🗳️ How Voting Works in Practice
Once registered, you can vote in one of three ways:
1. In-Person Voting
Most voters cast their ballot at a local polling station on election day. You’ll receive a poll card before the election, indicating your polling station’s location. Polling stations are usually open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
2. Postal Voting
If you’re unable to attend the polling station, you can apply for a postal vote. This allows you to receive and return your ballot by mail. Applications for postal voting must be submitted by specified deadlines ahead of the election.
3. Proxy Voting
Should you be unable to vote in person or by post, you may appoint someone you trust to vote on your behalf. Applications for proxy voting must also be submitted by the designated deadlines.
🧠Electoral System Overview
The House of Keys, the popularly elected branch of Tynwald, consists of 24 members, two from each of the Island’s 12 constituencies. During a general election, voters can cast up to two votes in their constituency.
For Local Authority Elections, eligible voters elect commissioners or councillors who are responsible for local services such as housing, waste, and recreation.
