How does the Isle of Man Worker route compare to the UK Skilled Worker route?

As workforce shortages grow across key sectors, more Isle of Man employers are seeking global talent to fill critical roles. However, navigating immigration routes can be complex – especially when comparing options across jurisdictions.

If you’re an employer in the Isle of Man exploring international recruitment, it is important to understand how your local immigration framework compares to the UK’s. After all, UK media is prevalent in the Isle of Man, and one might assume from UK media that is virtually impossible to bring an employee from outside Britain and Ireland. The good news? The Isle of Man Worker route is not only more cost-effective than the UK equivalent, but also significantly less burdensome administratively.

Here’s how the two routes compare – and why the Isle of Man remains a more flexible and business-friendly option.

Sponsorship and Employer requirements

Isle of Man: Employers must obtain a Confirmation of Employment (CoE) to hire non-British or non-Irish nationals. The CoE process was streamlined in February 2025, offering a simplified and more cost-efficient alternative to the UK’s layered sponsorship model.

United Kingdom: Employers must:

  • Hold a valid sponsor licence, and
  • Issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) for each worker.

This multi-step process imposes high regulatory and administrative costs, often deterring smaller UK businesses from hiring overseas talent.

Eligible occupations

Isle of Man: Maintains its own list of eligible and shortage occupations, designed to meet the demands of key local sectors like:

  • Financial services
  • Hospitality
  • ICT
  • Healthcare

The list supports a broader range of roles and qualification levels, including those below graduate level.

United Kingdom: Recent reforms to the UK’s Skilled Worker have:

  • Removed over 100 previously eligible roles
  • Restricted eligibility largely to graduate-level roles (RQF Level 6+)
  • Excluded most healthcare roles from the Skilled Worker route

These restrictions limit options for both employers and applicants.

Salary Thresholds

Isle of Man: The salary must meet the higher of:

  • The national minimum salary – currently GBP20,800, increasing to GBP25,447.50 on 1 October 2025, or
  • the minimum salary specified for the role (which ranges from GBP20,800 to GBP84,500).

United Kingdom: From 22 July 2025:

  • Most roles require a salary of at least GBP41,700 per year
  • New entrants must earn at least GBP33,400 per year

This makes the UK route significantly more expensive for both businesses and individuals.

 Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

Isle of Man: No IHS fee currently applies, although one is expected to be introduced later this year. We do not expect the charge to apply to those who have already applied.

United Kingdom: Applicants must pay an IHS of GBP1,035 per person, per year – upfront.

For a typical 3-year visa, this equates to:

  • GBP3,105 for a single applicant
  • Additional charges apply for dependants

Dependants

Isle of Man: Supports a family-inclusive immigration route. Most employment categories allow applicants to bring:

  • Spouses or unmarried partners
  • Children under 18

United Kingdom: New restrictions limit dependants to only:

  • Applicants in RQF Level 6+ roles
  • Roles outside the Temporary Shortage Occupation List

This makes the UK route less accommodating for families.

Why the Isle of Man route Is better for business

The Isle of Man Worker migrant visa offers:

A streamlined and less costly process
Access to a broader pool of skilled workers
Greater flexibility in eligible roles
A family-friendly framework for accompanying dependants

While the UK route continues to tighten requirements and increase costs, the Isle of Man provides a pragmatic and employer-focused alternative.
