Relocating from the United States to the Isle of Man

The Isle of Man is an established popular emigration destination for residents of the United States, attracted by our sense of community, personal safety, political stability and mild climate, at a time when many of these are increasingly challenged back home in the United States. The Isle of Man could be your new home, an English-speaking destination just a short hop from London, Dublin and other centres with European and worldwide connections.

Some of those finding a new home in the Isle of Man are retracing their ancestors’ steps, coming back to the place from which their parents, grandparents or great-grandparents originally emigrated to the United States. Others are descended from other British and Irish ancestors, but choose the Isle of Man over the United Kingdom or Ireland for lifestyle and security reasons. Others still may have no Manx, British or Irish connection, and may even be immigrants to the United States themselves.

What are the visa options for moving to the Isle of Man?

There is no Isle of Man immigration option for wealthy indivuduals or passive investors, but there are plently of other options available.

As a US resident, you may have various options for immigration to the Isle of Man, as can be seen from the following examples of cases which Kinley Legal has helped plan and implement since 2016:

(We’ve changed their names for confidentiality reasons, but everything else is unchanged!)

  • Arnold, who was transferred to the Isle of Man on a Worker visa by his employer, when it relocated one of its offices from the United States to the Isle of Man due to its convenient time zone and tax situation; we also identified that Arnold was eligible for Irish citizenship and therefore no longer required a visa to live and work in the Isle of Man.
  • Brandon, who has a Manx surname, who we identified was already entitled to citizenship of Canada through a parent, meaning they could in turn access the Isle of Man British Ancestry visa for Commonwealth citizens, based on a UK-born grandparent.
  • Charles, who relocated his own IT consulting business from the US east coast to the Isle of Man and was able to access the Innovator immigration route, now being on course to obtain Indefinite Leave to Remain (permanent residence) in only three years. Charles is married to a British citizen and will be able immediately to apply for British citizenship once he has ILR.
  • David and Emily, who relocated their own lifestyle business from California to the Isle of Man through the Innovator route and are now bringing further skilled employees from the United States.
  • Francine, who decided to relocate to the Isle of Man six years ago to marry her Isle of Man-resident partner who she met through work, and who has now already exited the immigration system and acquired British citizenship of her own.
  • Gillian, a former resident of the Isle of Man, who decided to return once more for retirement with her British partner after several years back in the United States.

A word of warning: some non-lawyers and UK immigration advisers may claim to understand the Isle of Man, but the rules, costs and procedures are now very different between the UK and Isle of Man. The chances are, if you use a UK immigration adviser to move to the Isle of Man, you will obtain incorrect or incomplete advice and end up losing time or paying more. Only qualified Isle of Man immigration lawyers are competent and insured to advise on Isle of Man immigration matters.
